None of the four Fresno open-run players made an impact in the And 1 Mix Tape Tour street basketball game. And none were picked to continue to the next stop. Waliyy Dixon, better known as Main Event, made a driving finger roll as time expired to give Team And 1 a 108-107, tour-opening victory against Team Fresno on Thursday at the Save Mart Center in front of more than 5,600 fans. Team Fresno got lost on defense as John Murphy -- Helicopter -- took the inbounds pass across midcourt and found Dixon on the right wing. He drove and went for a layup with Andre Larry under him trying to take a charge. No call was made and the ball spun in at the buzzer. The open-run players -- Showron Glover, Robert Tyler, Marcus Johnson and DeShaun Jackson -- played sparingly during the first half. Only Tyler and Jackson played in the second half, and both were out at the next dead ball. "No one stepped up," said Dixon, who chooses the players who stay with the tour. "That's what streetball is. When your job is on the line you have to make something happen." Dixon should know. Besides making the winning layup, he sank two free throws with 28.8 seconds remaining to give Team And 1 a 106-105 lead. Eric Holmes of Team Fresno, which included Fresno HeatWave and And 1 players, made two free throws on the next possession to give Fresno the lead again. Holmes, who plays for the Tijuana Diablos of the American Basketball Association, finished with a game-high 40 points. Not playing the back-and-forth second half hurt the open-run players' chances at being picked, but Dixon said crunch time is the best time for a player to showcase why he should be selected. "That's when you go to the coach and tell him to put you in," he said. "Their chances were just as good as the Professor's were." The Professor -- Grayson Boucher -- latched on with the tour after the first stop in Portland, Ore., last year. He lasted the entire tour and signed a contract as a regular And 1 player. Even if the players would've asked to be put in, chances are they would've been rejected, as coach Mike Ellis wasn't too fond of any of them. "They were terrible," he said. "They played scared. I even saw one of them actually shaking when he was out there." None of the open-run players were available for comment. Dixon, one of the tour's more popular players, didn't play any of last year's games because of a broken left leg suffered in a car accident. In his first game back he finished with 17 points, although none came on dunks -- for which he is most famous. The game was a typical And 1 event. Players caught alley-oops, trash-talked with players and fans and performed circus dribbling moves and passes. The crowd rooted for Team And 1 during the first half, giving standing ovations to Phillip Champion -- Hot Sauce -- for throwing the ball between his defender's legs and catching it on the other side, and to the Professor for a head-fake move. But as Team Fresno protected a 12-point second-half lead, the crowd backed the hometown guys. Dixon said the tour would like to come back to Fresno next year, as the players enjoyed their stay -- except for one thing. "It's hot," he said. "But next year we'll come back. The players gave us a good game and the crowd made it fun." | Best ever AND1 tape |
