Initially its members were mostly young blacks of the inner city New York area, but currently this organization has hundreds of chapters throughout the world. Bambaataa was instrumental in turning the street gangs of the late 1970's into the hip hop crews of the early 1980's, organizing break dance competitions and musical events, promoting peace and racial tolerance. Bambaataa became the pre-eminent hip hop DJ in New York by the end of 1980's. The music that he used would draw from a very broad range of musical genres, this was done as he searched for a new sound that could be used as the identifying trade mark for his new cultural group "The Zulu Nation". On hearing Kraftworks song Trans Europe Express he believed he had found the sound he was looking for, using this form of "elecro-boogie"(drawing from the new technology of drum machines and synthesizers) he released the pivotal hip hop recording Planet Rock, establishing the sound of rap that would dominate this genre of music until the mid 1980's. Hip hop's three separate components Graffiti, Break dancing and music (the latter being divided into two sections, Deejaying and Emceing) have always been fiercely competitive as different crews battle for territory. As discussed already street competitions were not uncommon between rival crews of break dancers or MC's. Deejays would also circulate live performance tapes to help establish their style in their respective territory. These tapes were traded and copied, being played on large portable cassette players (Ghetto Blasters) by youths of the inner city area. Tapes would also traveled far beyond their Bronx neighborhoods, when young Black and Hispanic military recruits continued to trade these tapes in bases through out not only the U.S. but all around the world, spreading the street sound of hip hop to a whole new group (both racial and economic) of people. | |
