Darryl McDaniel, 1964) and DJ Jam Master Jay (b. Jason Mizell, 1965) came from the middle-class New York borough of Hollis, Queens. They formed "Orange Crush" after being encouraged to form a rap group by Joseph's brother Russell Simmons (founding partner of the Def Jam record label). The group changed its name to Run DMC after leaving school in 1982. In 1983, Run-D.M.C. released its first single, "It's Like That" / "Sucker M.C.'s," on Profile Records. The group sound suited their hardcore street image, drawing heavily on stripped down drum machine grooves and harder, more aggressive rock guitar samples than had been previously used by other successful charting rap artists. Their rapping style saw Run and D.M.C.'s vocals overlap, as they finished each other's lines. The hardcore drum beats and powerful, literate, daring vocals, would signpost the arrival of the "new school" hip-hop style. They would inspire a new generation of more hardcore hip hop artists in the decades to come .Their debut album Run DMC released in 1984 become the first rap album to reach gold record status. Their second album in 1985 "King of Rock", saw Run-D.M.C. become the most popular and influential rappers in America (spawning a number of imitators). The album continued to merge rock & roll and rap together (using heavy metal records and thick, dense drum loops to rap over). In 1986 the band joined with Heavy Metal group Aerosmith to record the top 10 U.S. hit "Walk this Way". This single helped them to further break into the white crossover market. Run DMC's "Rasin Hell" album in 1987 sold over three million copies in the U.S. becoming the first Platinum rap Album, the first rap album to go to number 1 in the R&B charts and the first rap album to enter the U.S. top 10. Run DMC were also the first rap group to have a video aired on MTV and the only rap group included on the bill of the 1985 Live Aid Concert. | |
