James Todd Smith, 1969) recorded his first demo at the age of 13 whilst living with his grandparents. Rick Rubin on hearing one of these early tapes signed the young LL to his then fledgling record label, Def Jam. He became the labels first successful release in 1984 with the song "I need a beat", which sold approximately 100,000 copies. Dropping out of high school to record his debut album Radio (released in 1985), LL married contemporary pop music song structures with a hip hop rapped lyrical style, this earned him considerable praise for shaping rap into recognizable song structures. The singles (released in 1985), LL married contemporary pop music song structures with a hip hop rapped lyrical style, this earned him considerable praise for shaping rap into recognizable song structures. The singles "I Can't Live Without My Radio" and "Rock the Bells" helped the album to reach platinum record status in 1986. The following year, his second album Bigger and Deffer reached #3 partly due to the ballad "I Need Love" which became one of the first pop-rap crossover hits. His visual image as Gold-chained, barre-chested heartthrob would perfectly depict LL Cool J (an acronym for "Ladies Love Cool James") smooth sexual braggadocio. LL Cool J's skill for making hip-hop accessible to the pop market has always aided his charting career, but has left him open to attack by hip hop who have often accused him of being a "Sellout". His 1989 Walking with a Panther was perceived as one of these pop sell-out efforts and during a supporting concert, he was booed. In 1990 LL Cool J hit back at his critics with "Mama Said Knock You Out" (widely accepted as his strongest release) this became his biggest-selling album, establishing him not only as a pop star but also as a rap superstar. | |
