COLLEGE: Despite missing nearly all of the second half of his senior season at Kentucky due to a torn ACL, Derek Anderson was selected on the first round of the 1997 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 13th player chosen overall. Anderson suffered the torn ACL in his right knee January 18, 1997 in a home game against Auburn. The injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season, with the exception of two free throws which he made in the NCAA national semifinal game against Minnesota. The free throws were as a result of technical fouls and came in a dead ball situation, so Anderson was credited with two points in zero minutes played. In his four-year career at Ohio State and Kentucky, Anderson finished with 1,228 points, 379 rebounds and 321 assists. Despite missing action from Jan. 18 through the Final Four as a senior, Anderson earned second team All-SEC honors. He finished second on the team in scoring (17.7 ppg), free throw shooting (.811), assists (3.5 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). As a junior, Anderson helped the Wildcats to the NCAA championship, hitting a big three-pointer with under four minutes left in the title game against Syracuse to give his team a 69-62 lead. He sat out 1994-95 season after transferring from Ohio State, where he scored 554 points in two seasons. |
