From the Rucker to Venice Beach, the US is littered with playgrounds and gyms that represent the ultimate in pick-up runs. We took a look at the best and worst from each state and Washington D.C. and decided where you can find the best ballin' action. Peep our countdown and find out where we rated your hood.
#51 - New Hampshire

Court: Pulaski Park, Pine & Bridge Streets
City: Manchester
Level of Ball: I Got Next - As good as you're gonna find in New Hampshire. Solid high school ballers and average college-level talent make the runs competitive and entertaining ... for New Hampshire. If you got skillz, you'll fit right in and probably spend a lot of time on the winning side of the challenge court.
The Run: Show up on a weekend and there will be enough bodies around for a full-court burn.
The Truth: If you're in New Hampshire looking for hoop action, we apologize. After we get done feeling sorry for ya, we'd recommend Pulaski Park - it's the best of the worst.
***
Court: New Ipswich Town Field, Main Street
City: New Ipswich
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - Careful, if you hit three in a row they might make you mayor.
The Run : If you're lucky, the courts will be empty so you and your boys can ball for real. If you want to dominate, try to show up on a Saturday morning. Wear your MJ jersey - they might think you're the real deal.
The Truth: It's ugly but it's hoops, so it can't be that bad, right? Guess again.

#50 - South Dakota

Court: Kenny Anderson Rec Center, 3701 East 3rd St.
City: Sioux Falls
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - Come on, we're talking about South Dakota.
The Run: The best ball - and we use that phrase loosely - is run on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Truth: The only real positive of the Kenny Anderson Rec Center is that the runs are indoors during winters that are colder than McGrady's shoulder towards Vince.
***
Court: YMCA, 230 South Minnesota Avenue
City: Sioux Falls
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Some former D-I ballers still run here, but other than that you can hang if you got any kind of skill.
The Run: The good thing about the Y is that there are a lot of options for those who like to ball at different times of the day. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, two full-court runs are available from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, one court is in action around noon, and two full-court runs start around 6:00 p.m.
The Truth: The runs are strong enough to make the Y a solid option during the winter months. There's usually enough dudes around for several full teams, so you gotta win if you want burn.

#49 - Montana

Court: YMCA, 402 N. 32nd Street
City: Billings
Level of Ball: Bring Your Shoes - There isn't much to speak of in terms of pick-up ball in Montana, and the talent pool reflects that reality.
The Run: Monday through Friday, make your way to the Y around 2:30 p.m. for the chance at the best runs. On the weekend, Saturday and Sunday afternoon provide a decent amount of competition.
The Truth: A new double-gym will be opening sometime in December or January, so the quality level of the ball being played should increase. Until then, just remember that we warned ya.
***
Court: Billings Athletic Club, 777 15th Street West
City: Billings
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - Billings hasn't seen good ball since ... well, never.
The Run: The Athletic Club has a "Hoops For Lunch" program in place that usually attracts about 20 dudes for the run that starts at 11 a.m. and ends around 1 p.m. There is a $5 fee involved and we honestly don't know if we'd drop that much to ball here.
The Truth: The only thing this place has over the Billing's Y is the facility - for now. A suspended floor and break-away rims make it a solid court, but the level of competition might not make up those positives. By the way - break-away rims? Why?

#48 - Maine

Court: Payson Park, Baxter Blvd and Ocean Ave
City: Portland
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - Payson Park may be the best in Maine, but it's still Maine.
The Run: The best runs are on the weekend, between noon and five. Ballers will then agree to show up at certain times during the weeknights.
The Truth: Four or five years ago the best run was at Pleasant Street Park at Pleasant and Maple Streets in Portland, but since the Boston Celtics sponsored a 3-on-3 tournament and cleaned up Payson Park - complete with Celtics rims and a center-court leprechaun - that has been the spot.
***
Court: Riverton Community Center, 1600 Forest Avenue
City: Portland
Level of Ball: I Got Next - You'll find former Division I guys, and local Division II and III guys playing.
The Run: The weekend are solid.
The Truth: The runs can be strong and the court is indoors which is a plus when you consider the temperature in Maine has a tendency to be very cold during the winter.

# 47 - Wyoming

Court: Washington Park, South 20th Street and Rainbow Avenue
City: Laramie
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - The runs are surprisingly solid for Wyoming. Yes, we realize that's not saying much.
The Run: Drop by on the weekend for the chance at finding some bodies to ball with.
The Truth: Let's be honest, Wyoming is not a hot-bed of playground hoops. 'Nuff said.
***
Court: Civic Center, 7th Street and Custer
City: Laramie
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - You can find a game to run in but don't be looking to develop your skills against dudes who are better than you are.
The Run: Show up at lunchtime and you might get lucky.
The Truth: Damn, is it time for the next state yet?

#46 - North Dakota

Court: The Dike West Courts, Fourth Street S. and Fifth Avenue
City: Fargo
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The level of ball being played is surprisingly competitive.
The Run: Weekend runs are usually solid, with three lighted courts allowing plenty of opportunity for some burn.
The Truth: Watch out for psychos wanting to show you their wood chippers and you'll be fine. The black top is in good shape and for North Dakota, its a good place to ball.
***
Court: Family YMCA, 1608 North Washington Street
City: Bismark
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - There is a good mix of ex-college ballers who can bring it, but all skill levels should feel comfortable at this Y.
The Run: Daily runs occur Monday through Friday. Bring a five-spot and you'll get some burn on one of the four courts.
The Truth: When the artic blasts freeze ND, the Family Y has the best ball in town. A solid option in an area not known for winter hoops.

#45 - Rhode Island

Court: Mackal Field House, University of Rhode Island
City: Kingston
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks: It all depends on who's runnin' that day. Some days the ball's weak, sometimes the run's hot. A few years back when Lamar Odom and Tyson Wheeler were holdin' it down in Kingston, their organized games were the real deal. Nowadays they've sagged a little, but it's still the best run you'll find in all of Rhodie.
The Run: Like we said, it all depends who's runnin' that day. Stop in when school's in session and you're likely to find the best burn in the late afternoon / early evening. Weekends are a little more up in the air, so you might want to bring some of your boys to make sure you can go full.
The Truth: Rhodie's rec center will never be mistaken for the Rucker, but it is one of the best places in this pocket-sized state to get a run. Lamar and Tyson are long gone, but you can always lock yourself in against Zach Marbury and whatever Rams teammates are playin' that day.

Court: Stebbins Field Courts, Nine Flint Street
City: Cranston
Level of Ball: I Got Next: If the University has the best indoor run, Stebbins boasts the tightest comp on blacktop. Tucked away in a suburb south of Providence, the Stebbins run is better than any found on the quiet courts around the state.
The Run: Stebbins boasts one of the most valuable assets an outdoor court can possess - lights. Ballin' at night is legit.
The Truth: Rhode Island's about as big as your local 7-11, so take any quality comp you can get, and Stebbins has it.

#44 - Alaska

Court: University of Alaska
City: Anchorage
Famous Alums: Trajan Langdon, Jason Keiser
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The diverse crowd that ventures into the gym at U of A can ball and the burn can be intense during the winter months.
The Run: The school opens its rec. center on Monday through Thursday, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Fridays. On weekends, drop by between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. for some solid runs.
The Truth: In the middle of the winter, there's no better place to ball. The crew that gathers varies from former college players to members of the Alaskan native population. For a five-spot you can ball all day and enjoy some quality competition. On your way, stop by Karl Malone's off-season cabin and call him a D-head for us.
***
Court: The Parkstrip, 10th Avenue & E Street
City: Anchorage
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - We've heard some dudes with skillz show up, but it's hit or miss.
The Run: First, make sure it ain't 30-below out. Second, make sure it's not raining. If those conditions are met, the Strip usually sees about 15-20 dudes show up to ball.
The Truth: If mother nature isn't being a b*tch, the Strip is the place to ball in Anchorage.

#43 - Idaho

Court: The Slab, Sherman Avenue and Northwest Boulevard
City: Coeur D'Alene
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - The competition on the weekend is 100% legit.
The Run: The action is intense, highly competitive and you had better keep winning if you want any kind of burn.
The Truth: Surprisingly, The Slab is home to a serious brand of outdoor ball.
***
Locale: YMCA, 1050 West State Street
City: Boise
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - If you can dribble, you can dominate.
The Run: Bring a headband, three-striped knee socks, tight shorts and Chucky T's. We just want you to fit in ... don't ever claim we don't got your back.
The Truth: The indoor alternative to The Slab. The Y is an option - not a good option, but an option.

# 42 - Hawaii

Court: Paki Park, 3503 Leahi Avenue
City: Honolulu
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The talent isn't top notch, but the weather is.
The Run: With the weather perfect every day of the year, you can stop by at any time and find a run. Getting in some quality burn is hit or miss.
The Truth: We're down with the fact that you love hoops more than anything. One thing though ... Waikiki Beach is two blocks away, what the hell are ya doing ballin'? Ball Above All does not mean Ball above Thongs.
***
Locale: Kailau Rec Center, 21 South Kainalu
City: Kailau
Level of Ball: I Got Next - There is some surprising talent in Oahu. Word of advice - instead of "Dawg, I got next" use "Dude, I want to play."
The Run: A hot spot for some solid action. The same can be said for any beachside bar. The choice is yours....
The Truth: Not only is it totally acceptable to scream "Book 'em Dano!" when throwing back shots, it's considered cool. The Center is a good place for hooping, but you're in Hawaii ... please refer to "The Truth" above.

#41 - Iowa

Court: University of Iowa - The Fieldhouse
City: Iowa City
Level of Ball: I Got Next - You'll find a wide range of ballers getting some burn in at the Fieldhouse. If ya got decent skills, don't worry.
The Run: Show up anytime - seriously, anytime - and there'll be solid hoop action going down.
The Truth: Ten - count 'em - ten full courts are always available. Once you get tired of lookin' at corn, check this place out - it's well worth it for quality runs.
***
Court: The Cage, Main Street and Third Street N.
City: Thornton
Level of Ball: Bring Your Kicks - It's in the middle of nowhere. 'Nuff said.
The Run: If the sun is shining and the weather is warm, there are surprisingly decent runs on a daily basis. Check the court out on a Saturday for the best quality.
The Truth: FYI - please don't be scared off by "The Cage" moniker. The locals thought a scary name would make their game more intimidating. It's not true, although watch out for Billy-Ray. Our man turns into a major a**hole when he gets flushed on. Have some B-Ray.

#40 - Utah

Court: Marshall White Community Center, 28th Street and Lincoln Ave.
City: Ogden
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence: Unless you got game, stand to the side. Seriously.
The Run: Ball on Sunday from 1pm to 3pm for the best action.
The Truth: If you want a tough brand of ball, show up at the Marshall. Ex-college and high school stars make the competition top notch, but that's only half of the story. To hold your own, ya need physical toughness and a thick skin. The fouls are hard and fists have a tendency to be thrown. The court itself is excellent quality, but the runs aren't for the faint of heart.
***
Court: Liberty Park, 500 East and 1100 South
City: Salt Lake City
Level of Ball: I Got Next: You'll find true ballers all the way down to the Clipp - oops - dudes with no skills.
The Run: The daily action during the summer months is tight. The runs start to get serious in the early evening and continue until darkness falls and the rims can't be seen.
The Truth: Currently, the courts are under construction but the locale is well worth the stop when the work is done. While you're in town, stop by the Salt Palace Museum of NBA History where if you're lucky you can catch a glimpse of the Maloneasauras and the Stockterracops running on certain nights during the winter.

#39 - New Mexico

Court: Ft. Marcy Complex, 490 Washington Avenue and Artist Road.
City: Santa Fe
Level of Ball: I Got Next - High School and small college ballers make the runs competitive, but not over-the-top challenging.
The Run: Show up in the "cold" weather months of October, November, December and January for the best runs. From Monday to Friday, the gym is open for pick-up ball from noon to 1:30 p.m. On the weekend, you can get some burn in from 2 pm to 4 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Truth: The floor is indoors and the dudes who run are determined on a challenge court basis. Surprisingly, you can't sign up to ball as a team. With Saturday afternoons attracting the most talent, a weekend trip to the Complex is worth it.
***
Court: University of New Mexico, Johnson Gym
City: Albuquerque
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The best ball in Albuquerque. Some dudes with skill show up, so don't sleep on UNM.
The Run: Be sure to show up when the college hoops scene is not in full swing. The best game is usually found in the early evening hours, between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm.
The Truth: Depending on your timing, the $5 fee to play could be a bargain. In the past, Charles Smith and NFL wideout Terance Mathis have balled at the Johnson. So has Luc Longley, but no amount of money is worth the price of admission to that circus.

#38 - Wisconsin

Court: Lincoln Park, West Villard and Green Bay Avenues
City: Milwaukee
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Don't sleep on the Lincoln. Bring a complete game if ya want to ball.
The Run: Weather permitting, there always seems to be plenty of hoop being played. The weekend runs, however, are especially legit.
The Truth: Unless you're boozing at a local brewery, you have no excuse for failing to check out Lincoln Park. The ball is top-notch and the runs are seriously intense.
***
Court: James Madison Park, North Blair and E. Gorham Streets
City: Madison
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The quality of ball is above average. If you can't make it to Lincoln Park, this is the next best court.
The Run: The summer months bring out the best action. The weekday hoopin' is solid, but Saturday afternoons give this place its rep.
The Truth: This park is a solid option for outdoor summer ball, but nothing in the state tops Lincoln Park. If you're serious about your game, skip this stop and hit the real deal.

# 37 - West Virginia

Court: Woodrow Wilson High School, 410 Stanaford Rd.
City: Beckley
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Don't even think about it unless you got serious game.
The Run: During the summer months, there is no doubt that the early evenings draw the best talent from the surrounding areas.
The Truth: Tamar Slay, Jason Williams, and Randy Moss have all balled here. The action is intense and the skill level is ultra high. If ya got it, bring it. If not, find the local Y.
***
Court: South Mullen's Playground
City: Mullen
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Did ya read up on Woodrow Wilson high? Same deal.
The Run: When the summer nights are warm and dry, make your way to court around 5:00 p.m. to ball 'till dark.
The Truth: The crew from Woodrow Wilson High bounces to Mullen for the outdoor version of their runs. Ex-Marshall and University of West Virginia ballers mix in to make the action hot.

#36 - Washington

Court: Miller Community Center
City: Seattle
Level of Ball: I Got Next - It depends on what time you show up, but you gotta have mad game to ball here.
The Run: On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the gym is open for ball from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the action starts around noon and goes until 2:15 p.m.
The Truth: If you want to see some really hot action, make your way to the Miller around 7:30 on a Monday or Wednesday night. Prepare to talk some serious garbage and defend your space. There's one court and the "winner stays" rule ensures the games are rough. The games are played up to 15 points or 11 minutes - whichever comes first. Bottom line ... things get out of hand because the cats ballin' are serious about their run. If you can't understand that, stay away.
***
Court: Seattle University
City: Seattle
Level of Ball: I Got Next - College dudes with game. The talent level is high, but manageable if ya' got skills.
The Run: The lunch hour during the week is the time to hit the gym. There are enough dudes for a run but also plenty of opportunity for some quality burn.
The Truth: You need to know a student or be a member to ball. If you're really good, however, use the Jedi mind trick. It works ... trust us.

#35 - Vermont

Court: South Park, Main Street
City: Burlington
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The competition used to be a lot stronger back in the day, but the action is still intense.
The Run: During the summer months, the courts are loaded all day. The kids eat breakfast, ball, eat lunch, ball, eat dinner, and ball 'till dark.
The Truth: The fence that surrounded the two courts has been taken down, so the cage-like atmosphere that used to give the locale some atmosphere is no more. On the plus side, a lot of ballers make their way to South Park from the University of Vermont, St. Michael's College and Champlain College so the talent pool is deep.
***
Court: Barre Auditorium, 20 Auditorium Hill
City: Barre
Level of Ball: I Got Next: Yeah, it's Vermont, but the ball isn't bad at all.
The Run: The Barre Auditorium is a public facility with a newly refinished floor. The Vermont high school class 3 & 4 state tournaments are held there, along with a solid men's league that is held from October until April, three nights a week. They have a lot of things going on, but lunchtime runs are supposed to be where it's at for pick-up ball.
The Truth: Great facility that has a lot to offer. The state tournament and men's league seem to overshadow the pick-up scene. The games are competitive, but nothing a regular baller can't handle.

#34 - Colorado

Court: Skyland Rec Center, 3334 Holly Street
City: Denver
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The court is known for the legends who have balled there, but you can hang if you got game.
The Run: Every afternoon, from noon until 2:00 p.m. and again at night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The Truth: The action is intense because of the college and ex-pro players who occasionally show up. In January, collegiate double courts are being installed and the gym will seat a crowd of about 180. If you're in Denver, the stop is well worth the time and effort.
***
Court: Hoops in the City, Kofox and York Streets
City: Denver, Colorado
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The high school talent that hangs at the court is solid, but not spectacular.
The Run: The weekends are hot. There is only one court, and challenge rules are in effect, so the wait can get long. For an outdoor run in the city, however, the time spent on the sideline is worth it.
The Truth: If your lungs can hang a mile above sea level and you don't heave every j long through the thin air, Hoops in the City is a good run.

#33 - Alabama

Court: MLK Recreation Center, 4329 29th Street
City: Birmingham
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The talent is average, but the ball is guaranteed to be competitive.
The Run: The gym is open - free of charge - on Mondays through Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays show up to run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Truth: The gym is filled with talented current and former high school ballers. The single court is huge, with enough room for cross-court games to form. To get on, show up and form a team for the challenge court. When the competition gets strong enough, a full-court run will be set-up and the clock is turned on for a 12-minute game. With winner staying, the competition is fierce. Also, be sure to find the 55-year-old baller named "Mule" who still gets on the court to heave some j's from deep. If you want to hear a story, that cat is your man.
***
Court: Moorer YMCA
City: Mobile
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The hoopin' during the day isn't too strong, but the night action can be intense.
The Run: The daily lunch run starts at 11:30 a.m. and goes 'till around 1:00 p.m. Most of the dudes ballin' are over 35, so wear your three-striped knee socks and wrist bands to fit in. At night, the gym is open from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the games are considerably more competitive.
The Truth: Don't show up around lunch, unless you want to lose what you just ate after watching a series of weak set shots and "white man" lay-ups. The one saving grace? If you get really lucky, you might catch Antonio Lang showing up to run sh*t....

#32 - Nevada

Court: Sunset Park, Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue
City: Las Vegas
Level of Ball: I Got Next - It's hit or miss, but the games usually have some cats with legit skills.
The Run: The nice weather and the lighted courts make the park a baller's dream. You could seriously show up at almost any time of the day, any day of the week, and get in some serious burn.
The Truth: If you're lucky, some ex-Runnin' Rebs might show and guns won't be making your focus at the foul line an issue. A while back, L.A. gangs tried to take over the park and there was actual gun play across one of the courts. We've been told that the gang threat is over and it hasn't been a problem for years. The Kevlar rental window on the sideline makes us wonder though....
***
Court: Doolittle Recreation Center, West Lake Mead Blvd. and J Street
City: Las Vegas
Level of Ball: I Got Next - If you show up during the summer, that rating is quickly increased to "Grab Some Fence."
The Run: During the summer, the gym is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. During the fall and winter months, the starting time switches to noon.
The Truth: The burn is full of talent during the warm weather months. Some D1, ex-Rebel ballers and ex-Rebel football players make the average athlete tough to top. If you feel like you can hang, this is the place to be.

#31 - Oregon

Court: Salem Hoop, 3575 Fairview Industrial Drive
City: Salem
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The range is from D-1 talent all the way down to weekend hacks. It all depends on which of the facility's courts you want to ball on, but you can always find a run that matches your skills.
The Run: On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the Hoop has open ball from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On Saturday mornings, show up from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for some quality burn.
The Truth: If you want a quality indoor run in a top-notch facility, the Hoop is your spot. Six courts ensure plenty of 5-on-5, full-court runs with very little time spent on the sideline waiting for next. House rules state that each game lasts for 8-minutes or 15 points so the action ends at about the same time on each court. If you're gonna be in Salem from July 13-15, you might want to enter their major 3-on-3 tournament. The prize money for the event is major and the competition is fierce.
***
Court: Irving Park, Northeast 7th Avenue and Freemont Street
City: Portland
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The competition is above average, but far from over the top.
The Run: The courts are packed on the weekends and weekday evening hours during the summer.
The Truth: For an outdoor option to the Hoop, Irving Park is a solid choice. When the sun is shining and the Trailblazers are underachieving in the playoffs, you know it's summer in Portland and time to head down to IP's courts.

#30 - Delaware

Court: William-Anderson Community Center, 501 N. Madison Street
City: Wilmington
Level of Ball: I Got Next- This indoor facility has some solid runs for all age groups.
The Run: During the summer the best runs start at 1 p.m. You'll get some college and H.S. players, but nobody super nice. Anderson also holds a midnight league and various camps for younger players.
The Truth: This CC has a little bit of everything for every age group. Summertime seems to be when the best runs take place, but this is a place for kids as well as adults. Make sure to check the schedule so you don't get caught in the middle of a heated half-court battle with a slew of 8-year-olds. Good ball; you've just gotta know when to show up.
***
Court: Christian Conference Center, Garfield Parkway and PA Ave.
City: Bethany Beach
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Don't let the religious overtones fool you ... the cats who run here can be nasty.
The Run: This is an outdoor court located down the shore. The court has lights, but they don't work. What's up with that? After church services end at 11 a.m. on Sunday, it's on.
The Truth: Strictly summer ball for heads that want to catch a game while on vacation. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are the best times to get a game.

#29 - Oklahoma

Court: Woodson Park Gymnasium, 3403 South May
City: Oklahoma City
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - With plenty of overseas stars and ex-NBA ballers around, you want to make sure your handle is on before stepping on the wood.
The Run: During the summer, the action heats up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the week. The winter months are much slower, though you can still score some quality burn during the normal Saturday hours.
The Truth: The single indoor court sees some legit action during the warm weather months. Hands down, Woodson Park is the best gym for pick-up ball in Oklahoma. If you want to watch some sick high-caliber summer ball, check out the city's grudge match between team Greg Suttons's Prime Time squad and the Joe Atkins Oklahoma City All-Stars. The run is nasty, the house is packed and the winner owns the town for a year.
***
Court: Lacey Park, 2134 N. Madison Avenue
City: Tulsa
Level of Ball: I Got Next - When there's enough heads around for a full-court run, the action is hot.
The Run: The gym is open daily from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Don't show up during the summer, however, because the door will be locked.
The Truth: Lacey Park is totally hit or miss. The single court is known to be empty more times than it is full, but the runs that result from a packed house are well worth checking out. In Oklahoma, it's tough to beat Woodson Park but Lacey is known to have some legit action.

#28 - Missouri

Court: West End Recreation Center, Enright and Union Avenue
City: St. Louis
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The competition can be fierce and the two indoor courts are home to some quality burn.
The Run: From September to May, open ball is run during the week from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Truth: Cats from St. Louis and Missouri Universities bring the level of competition up a notch. Should you check out the West End? In the past, ex-Billiken and current NBA hopeful Justin Love used to stop by to wreck house. 'Nuff said.
***
Court: YMCA, 15th and Locust Street
City: St. Louis
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Almost as good as the West End, but the former has the Y beat.
The Run: During the week, you can run here from noon to 2 p.m. for the cost of a 10-spot. On Tuesdays, there are additional evening hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Truth: If Big Mac isn't in town, the Rams aren't scoring at will in the dome and the West End Rec Center is packed, it's the best run in town.

#27 - Tennessee

Court: McFarland Recreation Center, Pride and Cottonwood Streets
City: Memphis
Level of Ball: I Got Next - You don't have to be Dajuan Wagner to run game, but it wouldn't hurt. Don't sleep on the "neighborhood folk" that frequent the gym - despite what you might think, Tennessee isn't all about mullet-wearing dudes rockin' cut-off wranglers to the local NASCAR track. OK, maybe it is, but there's also some serious ball being played.
The Run: Weekdays only, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The non-basketball months see the most action with things slowing down considerably during the winter.
The Truth: The gym is packed with neighborhood ballers, which isn't bad when the Cavs' Cedric Henderson lives in the area. On some Friday mornings, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., a non-publicized run takes place that is by far the gym's best quality. We probably shouldn't have said anything, so it might be best if you show up during the regular hours of 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
***
Court: Mt. Moriah
City: Memphis
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Some of the best ball in Memphis. Bring your game or sit down so you don't get faced.
The Run: If the weather is clear, you can show up basically anytime and get into a heated run. The weekends are more likely to be packed, but there really isn't an off day during the summer.
The Truth: The court is located behind the East Precinct Police Station, so make sure you're clean before you make your way down. With D-1 ballers and cats from the L stopping by on a somewhat regular basis, this is the hottest joint in Memphis since Elvis's Graceland bedroom back in the day.

#26 - Arkansas

Court: Southwest Community Center, 6401 Baseline Rd.
City: Little Rock
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The competition is strong, but not overwhelming. A solid spot for some quality burn.
The Run: The older kids ball here from 7-9 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The gym also has some quality weekend hours - on Saturdays from 12 - 3 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 - 4 p.m. and again from 6 - 8 p.m.
The Truth: The action is indoors with six hoops hung up around two courts. When enough heads show, a full court run will break out. Most of the time, however, two cross-court games start up. Southwest is a must stop if you're in the Little Rock area.
***
Court: Dunbar Community Center, 1001 West 16th Street
City: Little Rock
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - If you're gonna ball in the summer league here, you better be good enough to have a shoe deal.
The Run: For pick-up hoops, the gym is open during the winter months from Monday through Thursday. Ball starts at 12:30 p.m. and goes 'till about 2:30 p.m. If you can, though, get involved in the center's summer league.
The Truth: The open gym action is non-existent during the warm weather because of the gym's nasty summer league. Corliss Williamson, Scotty Thurman and Derek Fisher all ball at the Dunbar. If you have the skills, the summer league is a must. If not, grab some fence and enjoy the show.

#25 - Minnesota

Court: Martin Luther King Rec Center, 270 North Kent St.
City: St. Paul - Minneapolis
Level of Ball: I Got Next - We were told the action is very competitive. They couldn't say the same thing about the talent.
The Run: The adults run from 1 - 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. During the week, the high school students take over the gym from 5 - 8 p.m.
The Truth: The MLK Center is totally hit or miss. If you catch it on the right day, the burn can be legit. If not, you'll be bangin' on out of shape white guys rockin' striped socks and wrist bands.
***
Court: Hancock Park Gym, 1610 Hubbard Street
City: St. Paul
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Don't sleep on St. Paul. There are plenty of ballers that heat up this gym throughout the Minnesota winters.
The Run: The real action happens every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Truth: A ton of ex-Minnesota Gophers, D-II cats and former JUCO stars make a visit to the Hancock worth the trip. The single court is usually packed, but a sign up sheet and games up to 15 points or 15 minutes (whichever comes first) make the time spend on the sideline minimal.

#24 - Nebraska

Court: Campus Rec Center, The University of Nebraska
City: Lincoln
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Most of the students and outsiders who ball will give you a solid run, but it's nothing you haven't seen before.
The Run: Seriously, you could show up at pretty much any time of the day and get some burn in. If you're not a student, all you have to do is grab a free visitor's pass at the front desk.
The Truth: The quality of hoop is not too strong, but this locale scores high on court quality and availability. There are six courts set up in the Center with 4 or 5 in constant use. If you have the lungs, this is the spot for solid all day indoor action.
***
Court: Butler-Gast YMCA, 3501 Ames Avenue
City: Omaha
Level of Ball: I Got Next - No need to feel intimidated at Butler-Gast. The ball being played is reminiscent of an average high school run. There's solid talent present, but no one's going to break your ankles.
The Run: The gym is open every night during the week from 5 - 8:30 p.m.
The Truth: The boards are packed with high school players who are taking their local school rivalries onto the court of the Y. The single court is usually used to run 4-on-4 cross-court action. Stop by during the winter months for the best chance at some quality burn.

#23 - Virginia

Court: Virginia Home for the Boys, 8716 W. Broad Street
City: Richmond
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - If you can't bring it, sit down and don't even waste your time.
The Run: Every Monday and Wednesday nights, with an additional run at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The Truth: Virginia is the home of dudes with some serious game and this is where to find them. Cory Alexander, Ben Wallace, Johnny Newman all run here - and those are just some of the names you recognize. Every single cat that steps on the boards brings some serious skills to the table. Don't be embarrassed if you can't take it ... we understand. Wimp.
***
Court: North Hampton Recreation Center, 1435 A-Todds Lane
City: Hampton
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - This locale is just as strong - if not stronger - than the Home For Boys.
The Run: The Center has an indoor and outdoor court so it depends what time of year you visit. During the summer, the outdoor joint is hopping all day. During the cold months, the gym is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 - 9 p.m.
The Truth: It's been said that Allen Iverson balled here the week he was drafted, and has been sighted several other times during the summer on the outdoor court. Joe Smith also shows his face from time to time. In addition to those studs, a bunch of cats from nearby Norfolk State College make their way to the Center to ball. When enough heads show, the action is hot.

# 22 - Kansas

Court: Prairie Life Center, 10351 Barkley
City: Overland Park
Level of Ball: I Got Next - If you show up during the winter, you can hang. If not ... well, don't say we didn't warn you.
The Run: Show up at lunch during the week, then again from 4:45 - 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, the floor heats up around 10 a.m. and doesn't stop until 4 p.m.
The Truth: During the summer, there is no doubt that this is the best pick-up action in Kansas. Tony Gonzalez (K.C. Chiefs), Erick Warfield (K.C. Chiefs), Chris Weems (Former Stanford standout), Jamal Walker (St. Louis U.), Carter Arnett (Cleveland St.), and Victor Williams (Oklahoma St.) are all regulars. Throw in the fact that the staff is totally comprised of D-I ballers who also join in the action and you can guarantee the Life Center is the gym to visit if you want to play the best.
***
Court: Hillcrest Community Center, 10401 Hillcrest Rd.
City: Hillcrest
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The gym is filled with high school caliber players. They can ball, but it's a young crowd.
The Run: The gym is open for pick-up ball on Monday through Friday, from 3 - 5 p.m.
The Truth: If you're young and want to run at a gym that caters to the high school age group, Hillcrest is the spot for you. For those over 17, you have to drop $3.00 before you can bang in the low post against the youngsters. If won't improve your game, but it's always fun to feel like Shaq for a day.

#21 - Arizona

Court: Indian School Park, 4289 N. Hayden Road
City: Scottsdale
Level of Ball: I Got Next - On certain days, the action can be hotter than the Phoenix mid-day heat. Well, maybe not, but some guys from ASU make their way to Indian Park so the competition can be fierce.
The Run: The best ball is played on Sunday and Monday nights. If you're an early riser, show up on the weekend mornings for some quality burn.
The Truth: The twin courts are outside so unless you have an IV hooked up to your arm, do not - we repeat - do not try to ball during the day. In an effort to keep guys out of the brutal summer sun, Indian Park has lights that enable runs to take place at night. The courts are lit until 10:30 p.m. during the week and 9:00 p.m. on the weekends. For an outdoor run in 'Zona, this is a spot worth checking on.
***
Court: Student Rec Center, University of Arizona
City: Tuscon
Level of Ball: I Got Next - It all depends on when you show up. The talent level ranges from U of A ballers all the way down to student hacks.
The Run: The Rec Center is open Monday through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. On Fridays, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to midnight. If the Center is open, so are the courts. In case you haven't figured it out, that's a lot of open gym hours.
The Truth: You need a $5 day pass to run, but we heard that you can show up at almost any time of the day and there will be enough dudes around for a game. The busiest times, however, appear to be between 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. each night. A visit to U of A offers the outside chance of posting up against Loren Woods and that alone is worth the trip.

#20 - Louisiana

Court: Gretna City Park, Gretna Boulevard
City: Gretna
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Gretna Park is known more for the quantity of its ballers, not the quality of their skills.
The Run: If the weather is nice, the courts will be slammed.
The Truth: There might be courts in Louisiana that have bigger names and slightly better talent, but you can always find a crowd at Gretna Park. Because of the large amount of guys waiting for some burn, the two courts are split up and used for half-court runs.
***
Court: Student Rec Center, Louisiana State University
City: Baton Rouge
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - This might be a university rec center, but some of the area's best talent shows up to ball. Don't sleep on LSU.
The Run: The Center is open for hoops on a daily basis from 3:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The real serious action takes place during the spring and summer months when the school's football and hoop players are free to run.
The Truth: Before they built their own court, Master P and Snoop Dogg used to roll up in their rimmed out Suburbans with an army of bodyguards so they could hoop. The Center is also the regular hang out of Derek Anderson, Ron Mercer and a number of ex-LSU players. We checked, but Daddy hasn't been back in a while.

#19 - Connecticut

Court: Edgewood Park, Whalley and West Rock Avenues
City: New Haven
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - The Edgewood is legendary. All that means is that you don't want to embarrass your mother by bringing a weak ass game inside the fence. We're dead serious.
The Run: To catch the best action, show up after 4 p.m. during the week. During the weekend, Saturday and Sunday mornings are hot.
The Truth: The Wood is loaded. D-I, D-II and D-III college ballers represent the core while CBA and overseas players add to the mix of sick talent. Ex-Husky Ray Allen and his boys have been known to show up during the summer for some burn.
***
Court: Student Rec Center, University of Connecticut.
City: Storrs
Level of Ball: I Got Next - If some of the Huskies are ballin' when you show up, you're screwed. If not, you can handle most of what the students throw at you.
The Run: The Center is open during the week from 6:00 a.m. to midnight. On Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight. During the school year, the early evening hours during the week and Saturday afternoons are your best chance for getting in a good run.
The Truth: You have two choices once you're in the Center. Guyer Gym was added in '97 and offers a more modern floor and newer rims. The old field house, however, is where it's at. The Huskies used to play all their games on the old boards before Gampel Pavilion was built. Even now, ex-UConn stars and current Huskies have been known to show up to ball with the regulars. There ain't nothin' better than facin' Travis Knight - trust us.

#18 - South Carolina

Court: Cinema 10 Courts, 20th and Kings Highway
City: Myrtle Beach
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Cinema 10 is located in a resort town but there is nothing even remotely lazy about the ball being played on these courts.
The Run: During the summer, the court is hoppin' on a daily basis from 5:00 p.m. to 2 a.m. Cinema 10 is located on the main drag of Myrtle Beach so there is no lack of heads to play and fans to impress.
The Truth: The lights, honeys on vacation, and the court's location make the action on Saturday and Sunday nights a must see if you're in South Carolina. Ex-NC State ballers bring additional game to an already stacked local lineup. The single court can be jammed so getting into the action is no easy task. Staying on the challenge court all night is even harder.
***
Court: YMCA, 1420 Sumter Street
City: Columbia
Level of Ball: I Got Next - It depends how good you think your handle is feeling the day you show up. If you think you can hang with the big dawgs on the primary court, go ahead. If not, the action on court #2 is for you.
The Run: The Y is open for hoops on a daily basis from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Truth: The X-man, Xavier McDaniel, has been known to show up, along with a number of former University of South Carolina players. To get on the court, you have to hit a j from the top of the key. If you miss, you're sittin' and the wait to get on might be lengthy.

#17 - Texas

Court: Fonde Rec Center, 110 Sabine Street
City: Houston
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Have some Steve Francis bangin' on your head. Unless your game is seriously legit, take a seat.
The Run: Open 5-on-5 ball is played daily from 9:00 a.m. to noon. From noon 'till 6 p.m., house rules state that 4-on-4 is to be run on the gym's two courts. We're not gonna argue, are you?
The Truth: We talked to our man Charles Solomon at the Fonde about who shows up in the off-season for some burn. How's this for a list of regulars? Sam Cassell, Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, Moochie Norris, Kenny Smith, the Dream and Moses Malone. Yes, you read that correctly. We were told the action is sick. Before you get too excited, you have to have major connections to find out when those cats reserve the Center. The rest of the area hackers have to show up to ball during the normal open gym hours.
***
Court: Larry Johnson Center, 3700 Dixon Avenue
City: Dallas
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Without a doubt, some of the best ball to be played in Dallas. The biggest names and most talented dudes show up during the summer.
The Run: The adults run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays and on Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Truth: If you sign the sheet when you walk in, you'll be guaranteed to see some action. The games are played up to 11 or for 10 minutes - whichever comes first. If you're lucky, you might run into LJ. If not, you still might have the opportunity to get faced by Kenyon Martin or SMU's Jerryl Sasser. If all else fails, head down during the season when the Knicks are in town. They practice at the LJ when on the road in Big D.

#16 - Mississippi

Court: Kurts Gym, 125 Gymnasium Drive
City: Jackson
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - A talented mix of playground legends and guys from the L ballin' during their offseason make the court at Kurts a spot for those with serious game only.
The Run: Open gym is run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the weekends. For the best action, show up during the summer months.
The Truth: The gym is old, the smack is fierce, the air conditioning is non-existent and the talent level is sick. Basically, Kurts is the perfect old school gym. Cats like Lindsey Hunter, Othella Harrington and Erick Dampier are regulars during the summer. To ball, you have to sign in when you walk through the doors. The cool part about the sign in sheet is that anyone has the chance to ball alongside an NBA pro. Just don't be the one responsible for blowing the game and getting them booted off the floor - they take off-season conditioning runs very seriously.
***
Court: YMCA, 800 East River Place
City: Jackson
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The competition isn't as stacked as the action at Kurts, but don't sleep on the cats at the Y.
The Run: The gym is open when the Y is, which is from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. The action, however, really takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and again from 4:30-9:30 p.m.
The Truth: The Y has two floors that are usually crowded enough for full court runs. If you don't have the skills to ball at Kurts, the Y is a safe - but still solid - alternative.

#15 - New Jersey

Court: "Baby Rucker"
City: Jersey City
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Don't let the "baby" fool you, the talent on the Jersey side of the river is legit.
The Run: If it's warm out, you can be assured that "Baby Rucker" will be jumping.
The Truth: Jersey playground legends Danny Hurley, Bobby Hurley, Terry Dehere and Jerry Walker cut their teeth on this court. Now, "Baby Rucker" is known for being the home of intense full-court games of taps.
***
Court: St. Rose Gym
City: Belmar
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Unless you have a shoe deal or carry "playground legend" status, don't even bother.
The Run: St. Rose is known more for the opportunity to see some big names ballin' in a small town gym rather than a solid spot for pick-up runs.
The Truth: Site of the Jersey Shore League, the St. Rose Gym is bustin' at the seams with some of the state's hottest summer action. The phat Seton Hall recruits tore up the JSL this summer and Lloyd Daniels used the runs to work on his game and continue his quest to make it back to the L.

#14 - Kentucky

Court: Douglass Park
City: Lousiville
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The best action can be found in the organized summer leagues of Douglass Park but the pick-up action can't be ignored.
The Run: From Sunday through Thursday during the summer, the courts are usually busy with the action of the "Dirt Bowl" - a local summer league tradition. Friday and Saturday afternoons are a good time to show for some quality burn.
The Truth: The two courts have lights that stay on until 12:30 a.m., so quality ball is being played throughout the entire night. The 25-year-old "Dirt Bowl" league starts on June 15th and winds up during the first full week in August. If you can find time on the court when the league runs aren't taking place, the action can be well worth a trip to Douglass Park.
***
Court: Dunbar Community Center, 545 North Upper Street
City: Lexington
Level of Ball: I Got Next - If you can beat the average high school baller, you can hang here.
The Run: During the week, the gym is open for ball from 3-9 p.m. but the stronger action tips off around 6 p.m. On Saturdays, guys hoop from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Truth: If you're in the Lexington area, check out Douglass Park first. If you can't get some burn there, the Dunbar Center is a solid alternative and a good indoor locale for the winter months. The crowd consists mostly of high level high school players with a mix of ex-college ballers.

#13 - Florida

Court: Miami Senior High School, 2450 SW 1st Street
City: Miami
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - The gym is stacked, bottom line. Unless you have serious skills, don't even bother.
The Run: The games are only run during the summer when all the local pros are chillin' on South Beach. The gym is full most days of the week but the hottest action occurs on Sunday afternoon.
The Truth: There might be more famous spots to ball in Miami, but few can match the intensity and level of play at MSHS. Most of the Heat hoop here over the summer. Glen Rice is also a regular, along with plenty of dudes from overseas. Throw in some ex-D1 ballers and ya got action that's hotter than South Beach at night. Well, maybe not.
***
Court: James Smith Center, Bruton Avenue
City: Orlando
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Plenty of strong high school and overseas talent ensure that the action is always hot.
The Run: The best time to find some quality burn is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-9:00 p.m.
The Truth: The Center is the summer spot for plenty of local pro players who need to get in some conditioning runs. The two full-size courts are beautiful and the talent level high - a must see when in the land of Disney.

# 12 - Ohio

Court: The Cage, University of Akron
City: Akron
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Yes, that's right, some of the top ballers in Ohio hoop in Akron. The second you don't give the proper respect to these guys is the second your ankle snaps.
The Run: The courts are jammed during the early months of fall. When school is in session, you can always find a game at the Cage.
The Truth: The quality of ball being played surprises most outsiders. The best high school players from the area converge on the Cage to take their school rivalries to the street. The best ballers from the surrounding area, U of A football and basketball players and the best players from the student body regularly show up to make a fall evening at the Cage the spot to be. When the two courts are jumpin' and the wait is long, you're done for the night if you lose.
***
Locale: The Creek, Euclid Creek Reservation
City: Cleveland
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Despite the court's flawed appearance, some of Cleveland's best gather at "The Creek."
The Run: On a nice summer afternoon, there will always be enough guys ready for a solid run.
The Truth: When you first look at "The Creek," the court looks like absolute garbage. The surface is cracked, the rims are only 9ft. high and a tree branch is a natural obstacle over one of the hoops. Still, the locals love the spot and believe the court's idiosyncrasies improve not only their skills but also their creativity.

#11 - Indiana

Court: Brookside Park, 3500 E. Brookside Parkway South
City: Indianapolis
Level of Ball: I Got Next - In the Hoosier state, the ability to hit from the outside is controlled by state law. The dudes at Brookside can ball.
The Run: Brookside has both indoor and outdoor facilities. During the summer, the two outdoor courts are jumpin' from ten in the morning until sunset. When the weather turns cold, the action heads indoors. The gym is open for ball from noon 'till 3 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The Truth: The park scene in Indiana is off the hook. At Brookside, the pick-up games can be hellacious with mostly high school studs running against each other. Think you can hang? Think again. Guys like Glenn Robinson, Keith Smart and Damon Bailey grew up on Indy's playgrounds. If you're in Indiana, don't sleep on the young kids.
***
Court: Arsenal Park, 46th and Critendon St.
City: Indianapolis
Level of Ball: I Got Next - When you show up, just remember that everyone in Indiana can ball.
The Run: When the weather is nice, the court is jammed. Don't worry about the time or the day of the week, just show up and you'll find plenty of opportunities for some serious burn.
The Truth: Some advice from a local: The hotter the temperature, the hotter the action at Arsenal Park. Trees shade part of the court, so a lot of the local ballers will hoop here during the heat of the day. At times, 50 to 60 dudes will be waiting for a run on the single court. If you lose, you're sittin' for a while.

#10 - North Carolina

Court: Martin Luther King Center, 401 South 8th St.
City: Wilmington
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The summer league is where the real action is, but the pick-up action is nothing to look past.
The Run: The Center is open for hoops from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Truth: The court has just been redone so you have to bring a change of kicks to be allowed on the floor. We could also tell you about the air conditioning that keeps the gym cool in the summer, but all that doesn't matter. Why? Cause the MLK Center is where Money learned the game. If you make your way to the gym, find a guy named William Murphy and ask him about all the times MJ was schooled by his brother, Larry Jordan. We swear, that's what he told us and we have no reason not to trust the man who has seen it all.
***
Court: Central Branch YMCA, Alleghany St.
City: Charlotte
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The level of play depends on what time of day you show up. Regardless of when you do, be ready for an intense run.
The Run: This Y has a lot of options. The action tips off around dawn on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with a gathering of the "pre-work" crowd from 5:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. If you're like us, and that's about the time you come home after going out the night before, the court is also open on a daily basis from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The Truth: The Y's "NBA Division" in the organized summer and winter leagues is outrageously stacked with talent. The pick-up action is also solid, however, with a strong mix of guys that ball professionally overseas, local college players and serious rec center gym rats. The facility has three small courts and one large one (which is being replaced this winter) so the wait for burn is never really a problem.

#9 - Massachusetts

Court: The Fens, Jersey Street and Park Drive
City: Boston
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Unless you can stroke like Bird, post up like McHale or have the mini-hook of the Chief, you best stay on the sideline.
The Run: The only thing that stops cats from showing up at The Fens is rain - and even that doesn't stop some of 'em. During the summer, the action at the courts is hella tight.
The Truth: The place to hoop in Boston and one of the hottest locations in New England. The play is rough and the college aged kids that make it down to the Fens will do anything to stay on the challenge court. Seriously, you have to have serious skills to ball at the Fens. Don't embarrass yourself in the Legend's backyard. That's just not cool.
***
Court: Forrest Park, Sumner Ave.
City: Springfield
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Go to the Hall to get inspired, then bring your best game to the park, you'll need it.
The Run: Solid runs can be found on any day during the week when the weather is warm. If you want to catch some serious burn, however, show up on a weekend afternoon.
The Truth: When reviewing Massachusetts, we couldn't live with ourselves unless we went to the home of the Hoops Hall of Fame to see where the cats in Springfield ball. When we asked around, Forrest Park was at the top of the list for pick-up spots. The Forrest currently has 3 full courts and we've been told that the park's pool is being replaced by two brand new lighted courts. The park looks like a family place, but don't let the atmosphere fool you. The cats here can flat out play, so bring all ya got.

#8 - Maryland

Court: Madison Square Rec Center, 1401 East Biddle St.
City: Baltimore
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Arguably the top spot in Maryland. You have to be damn good to ball here.
The Run: Head down to the "Dome" at night during the summer and you'll find some hot action. The outdoor court has a roof, so don't be scared away if it's raining.
The Truth: Anyone who is anyone in the Baltimore area balls at the "Dome." The court is a slab of concrete covered with an open-sided roof that provides an outdoor feel while also protecting the action from the elements. Sam Cassell, Reggie Williams and Muggsy Bogues learned the game on the court and a new generation of Maryland ballers continues to hoop at the Dome every night.
***
Locale: Takoma Recreation Center, off New Hampshire Ave.
City: Langley Tackoma Park
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Unless you have serious skills, don't even walk through the doors. We're not kidding.
The Run: The best burn can be found during the week, from late afternoon into the early evening.
The Truth: The Tackoma Center is a small gym filled with some of Maryland's best ballers. Make sure you can handle the physical side of the game because if you get bumped hard, you're hitting a wall. The court is known as Steve Francis's personal gym and cats like Elton Brand, James White, and DeMarr Johnson all made their reps on the boards. The phattest part? A sound system pumps pulsating rap music throughout the gym during the games. Cool.

# 7 - Georgia

Court: Run N' Shoot, 1959 Stewart Ave.
City: Atlanta
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Some of Atlanta's best ballers play at Run N' Shoot, but you can always find a court that will allow your skills to flourish.
The Run: You can literally show up at anytime and get in some burn. The facility is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Damn.
The Truth: We know Run N' Shoot is a chain, but the Atlanta branch is a solid joint for hoops. The complex has four full-size NBA and 3 regulation high school courts - getting a run in is not a problem. When at the Run N' Shoot, keep your head on swivel. Magic, 'Nique, R Kelly, and countless other celebrities have been known to pop in for a hoop fix.
***
Locale: Grant Park, 537 Park Ave., South East
City: Atlanta
Level of Ball: I got Next - They don't call it "Hot-lanta" for nothing. The locals can bring it. If you want to play, so should you.
The Run: We were told that the court is filled almost on a daily basis during the summer with the best time to ball being on a Sunday afternoon.
The Truth: Grant Park's two courts are jammed during the summer from early morning 'till dusk. The crowd is on the younger side, being made up of mostly high school aged kids. What they may lack in age is more than made up for in skill. If you're looking for a solid outdoor run in Atlanta, Grant Park is your spot.

#6 - Pennsylvania

Court: 11th and Lombard
City: Philadelphia
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The glory days of the park have since passed, but some of the locals can still bring it.
The Run: The park is packed almost on a daily basis during the summer and warm fall months. The serious burn, however, can be found on Saturday mornings.
The Truth: The courts at 11th and Lombard are legendary in Illadelphia. Mo Cheeks, Lionel Simmons, Hank Gathers, Doug Overton and Bo Kimble have all showed up at one time or another to display their skills. The glory days of the park may be gone, but the local status of the courts ensure that you'll never know who you might see lacing them up.
***
Court: 16th and Susquehana
City: Philadelphia
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The runs are highly competitive, but cats with skills can still hang.
The Run: The best action can be found during the park's sick summer leagues. The pick-up ball is almost as good - especially on weekend mornings.
The Truth: The area is not the best but not life threatening. If ya go, bring your track shoes. The court is a legit 94 feet (unusual for a playground), and the game-style is up and down. Sonny Hill, the Doctor, Wali Jones and the rest of the Philly ol' schoolers used to call the park their home.

#5 - Michigan

Court: St. Cecilia's, Burlingame Ave.
City: Detroit
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Seriously, don't even bother.
The Run: Don't look for open gym at St. Cecilia's, the summer leagues keep the gym hopping all day with some of the best hoops action in Detroit.
The Truth: One of the top church leagues in the country, St. Cecilia's has seen some of the state's top talents pass through its doors. Magic, Zeke, C-Webb, Jalen Rose - among others - have all learned the game in the famous gym.
***
Court: Martin Luther King Park, Fuller Ave.
City: Grand Rapids
Level of Ball: I Got Next - It ain't St. Cecilia's, but that might be a good thing for the average baller looking for some solid hoops action.
The Run: Summer weekend mornings always draw the largest crowd, but you can also find a strong crowd on most weekday evenings.
The Truth: The games can be rough and the trash talking mean. If you can keep your head on your game while your defender is ripping apart your mama, you'll fit in just fine. Regardless, the MLK is a sick spot for some hot playground runs.

#4 - Washington, D.C.

Court: Run N' Shoot
City: Washington, D.C.
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Several big names show up to ball at the complex, but there's enough courts and enough hours in the day to find a game that fits your skills.
The Run: You can literally decide to hoop at anytime of the day on any day of the week and find some decent burn.
The Truth: If you want to ball 24 hours a day, this is your spot. The ten courts are open around the clock, seven days a week and cats from the L - including Steve Francis, frequent the joint.
***
Court: Yates Memorial Field House, Georgetown University
City: Georgetown
Level of Ball: I Got Next - The occasional Hoya might show up to ball, and even if they don't, the talent level is high at GU.
The Run: The field house is open daily from 7 a.m. to midnight. If the doors are open, the courts are ready for burn.
The Truth: The action really heats up when current and former Hoyas show up to ball alongside some of the regulars. The center has four full-sized courts, so the opportunity is strong to find a game that fits your skill level. During the summer, Allen Iverson can be found running sprints on the floor before he hits the weight room for his intense daily lifting routine. OK, maybe not.

#3 - Illinois

Court: Forrest Park, Foster Ave.
City: Chicago
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - The top talent from the Crilla balls at Forrest. Unless you got game, don't even think about stepping between the lines.
The Run: If the it's summer, you can bet the court will be packed. Don't be afraid to wait; the number of heads at the park can sometimes mean a long time between runs.
The Truth: A legendary Southside park, with quality runs still in effect. A visit to Forster Park offers the opportunity to ball where Chi-Town legend Tim Hardaway once graced the concrete.
***
Locale: Jackson Park, East Hayes Drive
City: Chicago
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Just like Forrest Park, Jackson is the site of some of the top games in the windy city.
The Run: During summer weekends, locals gather at the park and the scene almost makes the action on the court a secondary attraction.
The Truth: One of the top playground locations in the Crilla where big names are still known to show up and play. Back in the day, it was big news when some of the Bulls used to make there way down to the park. Now, everyone just laughs.

# 2 - California

Court: Venice Beach, Venice Blvd. and Pacific Ave.
City: Venice
Level of Ball: I Got Next - Venice has some solid ball, but style is sometimes more important than substance.
The Run: The famous spectacle of Venice Beach and the year round warm weather of southern California ensure that the courts will always be crowded with dudes willing to ball.
The Truth: The scene at Venice Beach makes a trip to the courts an absolute must. You seriously never know who you might see lacing them up - from former and current Lakers to some of the biggest names from the world of entertainment. If you're serious about your ball, the wait to get some burn can be lengthy. However, some of the local talent - and we're not talking ballers here - make the time spent on the sidelines almost as enjoyable as the games themselves.
***
Locale: Mosswood Park, West MacArthur Blvd.
City: Oakland
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - Don't sleep on Oak-Town. Some of the best talent on the left coast comes out of the bay area.
The Run: The hottest action takes place during summer evenings. The courts have lights, so the action often lasts long into the night.
The Truth: The hoops tradition in Oakland is nothing to ignore. GP, Isiah Rider, and Jason Kidd all got their start at Mosswood. Oakland itself has the highest per capita rate of players in the L. Today, some of the bay area's brightest are preparing their skills for the future under the watchful eyes of the Mosswood elders. If you want to find an aggressive, tough and fundamentally sound brand of ball, this is your stop.

# 1 - New York

Court: West 4th St., Greenwich Village
City: NYC
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - We mean that literally. Unless you have skills and can take the physical stuff, grab some fence and watch. If you try to ball when you shouldn't, the locals will be more than happy to introduce you to the iron.
The Run: Don't get in the way of the court's famous summer league and you'll be fine. Even when the court isn't packed with organized ball, the pick-up action is always hot. During the summer, there will always be enough heads around for some serious burn.
The Truth: "The Cage" (the small single court is surrounded by a chain link fence that sits extremely close to the sideline) is a locale where your "A" game is a must if you want to hang with some of the city's finest ballers. It is widely known that the ballers at West Fourth play a physical brand of ball, so the fence has collected its share of "illegal" pick victims. Playground legend Lloyd Daniels - among others - made his name at "The Cage," which is one of the finest outdoor courts in the entire nation.
***
Locale: Rucker Park, West 155th St. and 8th Ave.
City: Harlem
Level of Ball: Grab Some Fence - You've seen the documentary and you know about the stories. Cats from the L have been embarrassed at the park. Unless you have a Rucker nickname, don't even bother when the regulars are present.
The Run: The real action takes place during the playoff runs of the summer's EBC (Entertainers Basketball Championship).
The Truth: The Mecca. The Rucker is arguably the finest, most historic summer playground court in the nation and home to the famous EBC championships. Allen Iverson, KG, Starbury, Vince and Stackhouse (who was embarrassed) have all showed up to ball. The EBC Championships and the characters that run in that league are legendary. If you have a nickname at the Rucker, you're a God in the eyes of the local community.
